Art Professor Collaborates with Noted NIU Alum/Business Professor
NIU School of Art Professor Manny Hernandez, who continues to help people make potable water in poverty-stricken areas throughout the world, will collaborate with Dennis Barsema, noted NIU alum and currently a professor in the NIU College of Business. Dennis has much experience working with people who live in poor communities around the globe, so matching the work of Manny and Dennis is a natural fit. Ben Mahmoud was a highly valued faculty member in the NIU School of Art and was a world-renowned artist. Ben passed away from Lou Gehrig's disease on June 2, 2009. In conjunction with the ALS Association of Greater Chicago, Ben's family has arranged for a memorial retrospective and silent auction.All proceeds from this event will be donated to the ALS Association, Greater Chicago Chapter. Select pieces from the Ben’s private collection of sculptures, paintings and limited edition artistamps will be on exhibit and available for purchase.
Larry Williams, Dean Rich Holly, Tom Bough Concerto for Horn and Wind Band, by Dr. Thomas Bough, professor in the NIU School of Music, received its world premiere performance on Wednesday, February 26, with noted horn soloist Larry Williams performing the solo horn part. Dr. Bough conducted the NIU Wind Symphony in the premiere of his work.
The Concerto is the result of several meetings, collaborations and conversations between Tom and Larry. They are both artist/clinicians for the Yamaha Corporation of America (Tom is a tubist), and as such have appeared together providing brass instrument clinics across the United States. Tom and the Wind Symphony also recorded the work, with Larry as soloist, for an upcoming CD of Tom's compositions.

The NIU School of Music is pleased to announce the upcoming "Principal Trumpet-Fest" which will take place Friday, April 3 and Saturday, April 4. The event is being hosted by Professor Mark Ponzo and will feature performances and master classes by Chicago Symphony Orchestra Principal Trumpet Chris Martin and Lyric Opera Orchestra Principal Trumpet William Denton, as well as concerts by the award-winning Illinois Brass Band and several noted NIU trumpet alumni.
