NIU Well-Represented at Composers' Conference

Robert Fleisher, Katri Ervamaa, Andrew Walters

Robert Fleisher, NIU Professor and coordinator of music theory and composition, recently returned from the Region VIII conference of the Society of Composers, Inc. (SCI) at the University of Puget Sound (Tacoma, WA), held March 5-6. Dr. Fleisher was one of 42 composers from all over North America (including Canada) selected to participate, after 174 works were considered. His 2004 composition for solo cello, Ma mère, received an outstanding performance there by NIU alumna Dr. Katri Ervamaa (University of Michigan) in a program featuring members of the new music ensemble, Brave New Works. Dr. Fleisher also enjoyed seeing another NIU alum, Dr. Andrew Walters, whose composition for flute and 2-channel electroacoustic playback, Moth to Flame, was performed during the conference.
