School of Art Holds First Annual Northern Iron Union Pour
Iron casting has experienced a resurgence in contemporary sculpture over the past decade and is explored in a range of experimental work, November 1 through 6, in conjunction with Northern Illinois University’s School of Art. The "Northern Iron Union Pour" is being hosted in part by the Sculpture Program of NIU's School of Art. The conference will bring together metal casters and artists from across the country.
Kicking off the conference activities, students, faculty and invited guests will create two-piece resin-bonded sand molds to be used in the iron pour. There will also be various demonstrations and lectures by NIU professors and outside speakers. In concurrence with the conference’s events, the public is invited to the iron pour, all day on Saturday, November 6, 2010, in the sculpture yard located at the south west corner of the Visual Arts Building, Jack Arends Hall, on the University’s DeKalb campus. Observers will witness scrap iron transformed into molten metal in the cupola fabricated especially for this event by Eric Fuertes, graduate students and faculty from the sculpture division.
The public is also invited to attend a lecture given by internationally renowned iron artist and Texas A&M Corpus Christi Professor Jack Gron as well as a themed exhibition. The lecture will be held on Thursday, November 4, at Jack Arends Hall, room 103, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, and the exhibition will occur at the Pleasant Street Gallery on Friday, November 5, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm before the iron pour. The public can learn about both traditional and contemporary casting and the nature of the metal arts, and about how choices of casting media relate to the content of artwork.
The lecture, exhibition, reception and Northern Iron Union Pour are free and open to the public starting on Monday, November 1, in Sculpture room 113 from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.
