Grab your guitar and head for Northern Illinois University’s Music Building on October 1 for the first NIU All-Styles Guitar Day! Five professional guitarists with expertise in different types of guitar playing will perform and conduct lectures, demonstrations, and master classes. Guitar vendors and builders have been invited to show new and vintage instruments. All players are invited to rehearse and perform in the GuitOrchestra.

Virtuoso Fareed Haque, guitar professor at the NIU School of Music, has designed the event to appeal to all guitarists, including high school players, teachers, performers, and enthusiasts. Featured guests are Larry Coryell (jazz), Muriel Anderson (folk), Rex Carroll (rock), and Eduardo Minozzi Costa (classical).

The Eddie Gomez Trio will perform at the NIU School of Music Boutell Memorial Concert Hall on September 7, 2011 at 8:00 pm.

Legendary bassist Eddie Gomez has been on the cutting edge of music for over four decades. The GRAMMY® winner’s impressive resumé includes performances with jazz giants such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Bill Evans (11 years), Gerry Mulligan and Benny Goodman. Eddie’s distinctive sound and style resonate on hundreds of recordings spanning the worlds of jazz,
classical, Latin jazz, rhythm & blues, popular and contemporary music.

Gomez’s diverse musical contexts include working with Freddie Hubbard, George Benson, McCoy Tyner, Hank Jones, Nancy Wilson, Tania Maria, Ray Barreto, the All Star groups “Steps Ahead” and “New Directions” as well as on GRAMMY®-winning recordings with Chick Corea.

Jazz Piano Professor Earns Lifetime Achievement Award

Willie Pickens, internationally renowned jazz pianist and member of the faculty of the NIU School of Music, has just received the Walter Dyett Lifetime Achievement Award from the Jazz Institute of Chicago.

Congratulations, Willie!

Perhaps most noted for his work with the Elvin Jones Jazz Machine, Willie has also been the pianist for Sammy Davis, Jr., Quincy Jones, Roberta Flack, Wynton Marsalis, Clark Terry and a large number of other jazz luminaries.
