All-Styles Guitar Day Announced
Grab your guitar and head for Northern Illinois University’s Music Building on October 1 for the first NIU All-Styles Guitar Day! Five professional guitarists with expertise in different types of guitar playing will perform and conduct lectures, demonstrations, and master classes. Guitar vendors and builders have been invited to show new and vintage instruments. All players are invited to rehearse and perform in the GuitOrchestra.
Virtuoso Fareed Haque, guitar professor at the NIU School of Music, has designed the event to appeal to all guitarists, including high school players, teachers, performers, and enthusiasts. Featured guests are Larry Coryell (jazz), Muriel Anderson (folk), Rex Carroll (rock), and Eduardo Minozzi Costa (classical).
Fareed Haque’s sessions on classical and jazz band guitar basics are geared especially for the high school players. A graduate of North Texas State University and Northwestern University, Haque is an active performer whose career spans the spectrum of musical styles, moving easily between jazz and classical guitar,
Larry Coryell will conduct a Q&A session. A Texas native, Coryell has been a professional musician since the 1960’s. Known as a jazz guitarist, he has played acoustic and electric and in the genres of rock, eastern music, flamenco, and jazz fusion. Eduardo Minozzi Costa will present a classical master class open to all and featuring NIU guitar students. A native of Brazil, Costa is a graduate student at the University of Arizona. The winner of many competitions, he was recently awarded first place at the 2010 Indiana University Guitar Festival and Competition.

He plays lead guitar and is primary songwriter for the award-winning Christian metal band Whitecross. Muriel Anderson will teach a fingerstyle guitar class. One of the world’s most respected fingerstyle guitarists and harp-guitarists, Anderson is the first woman to have won the National Fingerpicking Guitar Championship. Her facility across the genres of folk, classical, jazz, bluegrass and international music is revered by guitarists worldwide.
To conclude the day, Haque, Anderson, Coryell, Carroll, and Costa perform in an all-styles guitar concert in the evening. They are joined by the GuitOrchesta. All attendees are invited to play in the GuitOrchesta, which will rehearse during the day.
