Kasia Stachowiak

The NIU School of Art is pleased to announce that student Kasia Stachowiak has won two awards at the annual juried Blick Art Materials "Ars Nova" Competition. Kasia has been named the first-place winner in the junior year category for her piece "Maladjusted" as well as the "Best-in-Show" winner for her work "Adaptation."

One year ago, Kasia won the freshman/sophomore category as well as the Juror's Choice prize. In both years, Kasia's work competed against work of students from all levels including graduate students.

Kasia is a native of Poland with a life-long interest in art who came to the United States with her parents while she was a teenager. She began her college years at Harper College expecting to pursue a business degree, but met art faculty that made a decidedly positive impact on her life. Transferring to NIU in spring 2011 as a printmaking major, clearly Kasia has found her passion and true direction!

About her art work, Kasia says "My interest in found discarded objects/materials, nature, and architectural plans influence the way I construct and manipulate sculpture and print media. Having a background in sculpture has inspired me to explore diverse possibilities to bridge printmaking with three-dimensional form. I intend to explore and push the traditional boundaries of both disciplines while creating compelling artworks."

Congratulations, Kasia!
