Music Professor Earns Kudos for New Recording

David Maki, NIU School of Music composition faculty member, is featured as both composer and performer on double bassist Anthony Stoops’ new recording, Insights: New Music for Double Bass. The CD features new works by Maki and three other composers and was recorded at NIU by Dan Nichols, Head of NIU School of Music Recording Services, assisted by NIU music graduate student Scott McConnell. It was released by Albany records in January, and has been garnering positive reviews.

American Record Guide says, “David Maki’s "Out of the Woods" is an expressively satisfying composition that pulls us in varying directions…” Fanfare Magazine says, “Every single movement is a small gem; the music bounces and propels itself through the use of real jazz rhythms, the lack of improvisation notwithstanding. Maki’s own piano solo in the last movement, titled "Circles,” has a sort of Jaki Byard feel to it, and throughout Stoops’s bass alternately thrusts and sings in both a musical and lyrical fashion."

Congratulations, Dave, Dan and Scott!
