Steelpan Alumna Earns Noted National Fellowship

Congratulations are in order for alumna Mia Gormandy, who earned her Bachelor of Music degree and Master of Music degree from the NIU School of Music as a performance major specializing in steelpan. Since her time at NIU, Mia has completed a masters degree in musicology at Florida State University and remains there as a doctoral student in musicology. While working on her degrees at FSU, Mia is directing their steel band and teaches courses in world music and popular music.

We've just learned that Mia is this year's recipient of the prestigious Howard Mayer Brown Fellowship, awarded by the American Musicological Society. The press release about the award states "The Howard Mayer Brown Fellowship is presented by the Society to promising minority graduate students pursuing a doctoral degree in music. The 2014–15 fellowship recipient is Mia Gormandy (Florida State University)." There is only one award nationwide, so this speaks volumes about Mia's graduate work.

Congratulations, Mia!
